I feel like perhaps you're trying to change your stripes to fit into this ideal that works for some people. Everywhere there's different talents and eventually people find their niche. Instead of trying to become something you're not, focus on what you've got. I've known a few autistics and was very close to one. He was remarkable and could do things completely out of the realm of other people's comprehension, impossible, impractical things. My experience with autistics is that whatever they zone in on is done to a degree that's extraordinary. Worry about what you do well, not what others do well. Sure, a smile here and there is extremely helpful but just be yourself and your individual talents will surely take you places.

You know how we got to the moon? Autistic people. And that is a definitive fact.

I guess I just need someone who sees what I got and is willing to make it work for them. So far most people I run into don't care what I have, and do not see anything that I can do for them that would benefit all. We also live in a society that seems to no longer care about extraordinary achievements such as putting a man on the moon. Instead people with good people skills (perhaps sociopaths) are glorified instead of gifted people.

On the outside, it might seem like being a yes man, but it's more like how to "negotiate" to get what you want.

Sometimes that negotiation simply entails an understanding their personal interests or motives, or forging a bond based on common interests.

I'm definitely not a yes man, but I will eagerly help people to the extent that I am able for the possibility, but not the expectation, of future benefit of some kind - good will, karma, etc.

I'm not autistic, but we all have different personal challenges. The fact that you are corresponding with us intelligently tells me you are capable. Perhaps you don't feel confident in your social skills, but you must try to overcome your deficits, as we all do. Don't let autism be a crutch for you not to try.

Ok, I'm done lecturing. :-)

If you need woodworking advice, you know where to find me.

Right, Sociopaths are experts at negotiation. They know what they want and knows how to manipulate people to get it. Sometimes I wish I was like that but I hate the part about having absolutely no empathy or conscience.

Problem is, a big part of negotiating and befriending people is nonverbal communication, and Aspies are very bad at that due to the way they process information vs. normal people. Eye contact is also important, I'm told, as well as various nonverbal things (facial expression, etc.) that I simply do not get. It's like explaining colors to a blind person.

I just talked to GC North Austin's store manager and they said they just transferred a tech from Round Rock...

Good news (at least for now)

I just finished doing a setup for a musician at my church. First gainful employment of any kind in the US. I did a set up on his Telecaster, it had super low action but very annoying buzz. I had to work the nut quite a bit (it was very high) and tweaked the truss rod/intonation as well (the cause of the buzzing). The guy loved it, and another guy remarked that it played just like a custom guitar his friend had. Hopefully this will lead to more work...

I just shove a 1/4" round-bottom bit in my router and cut the slot.
Then I chisel out where the fat end sits.
Seem's simple enough. Never gave it much thought.

Don't be so quick to discount a topic that may seem irrelevant to you. Not all topics follow a linear path, with many side questions that bring about some interesting answers on different topics. Just like this reply has nothing to do with Double Acting Truss rod slot questions.

Alex

Not much of this this thread has to do with truss rod slots.
I'm glad we are still friends, Alex.

I'm sorry for the topic diversion. Is it ok to have the thread split to preserve the original topic?

Tai, consider the topic sprawl serendipity. We can talk about both.

So are double acting truss rods snake oil? Is a homemade truss rod or basic one just as good. As you may know, my home overlooks a river and it rains a lot here so humidity is a major factor. What's the best truss rod for this scenario?

Thanks,

-j

I think a double acting truss rod offers more flexibility, like for example if the neck were to develop a backbow either from fretwork (too narrow of a slot or too wide of a tang due to manufacturing inconsistencies) then a double acting truss rod could correct it.

I've only used the double rods because I don't want to cut a curved slot for a compression rod.

Warmoth says that the single rod can eventually distort the neck, is there any truth to this?
